The Secondary Education Department provides leadership and  support to school sites in the core curricular areas of English language arts, mathematics, history social-science, science, health, and foreign language. Other programs supported by the department include Visual and Performing Arts, career technical, Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID), Gifted and Talented Education (GATE), Instructional Technology, Summer School, Interventions, and California Partnership Academies.   Some of the grants and funding under the auspices of instructional services are the California High School Exit Examination (CAHSEE) grant, Teaching American History Grant (TAH), Guidance and Counseling funding SB813 and AB1802, and Perkins.  The department supports schools by promoting content standards, facilitating the selection of instructional materials, developing pacing and curriculum guides, identifying benchmark assessments, providing professional development,  and building site leadership capacity.  Focus is on meeting the needs of all students from advanced learners to students at-risk of not passing the California High School Exit Exam and/or not meeting graduation course requirements

Instructional services specialists and staff development specialists work directly with teachers, principals, and para- professionals to facilitate curriculum committees and provide professional development. They work to ensure both novice and experienced educators are highly qualified to effectively instruct all students in grade-level standards.
